2,100 Tons of Asbestos Removed from Abandoned Pillsbury Mills Plant

Sep 21, 2017

A considerable amount of environmental waste remains at the abandoned Pillsbury Mills plant in Springfield, IL after 2,100 tons of debris containing asbestos was already removed from the site.

“We still have a lot of other contaminants throughout the property. There’s mercury, PCB ballasts, waste oil, there’s sulfuric acid,” said Kevin Turner, site cleanup coordinator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We previously wrote about this 18-acre facility that lay abandoned for more than 15 years before the EPA stepped in after P. Mills LLC, the owner of the site, failed to meet a number of cleanup deadlines ordered by a court. Joseph Chernis IV, one of the partners of P. Mills LLC, pled guilty to federal charges of making false statements in a different state environmental case and improper asbestos cleanup.

A dozen parcels of the property were scheduled to be sold off at a surplus property auction in early September, but they were pulled over concerns with possible toxic contamination.

Tuner expects the asbestos to be fully cleared out by the end of September, and the remaining contaminants should be gone by the end of October. However, some of the material removal plans were delayed when a recycling center in Texas was inundated following Hurricane Harvey.

Sangamon County Treasurer Tom Cavanagh said that the parcels may not return to auction until 2018.

Asbestos remains a deadly threat, and countless Americans are faced with the devastating effects caused by exposure to this mineral every year.
