New Study Shows Connection Between Proton Pump Inhibitors and Chronic Kidney Disease

Feb 1, 2016

Prescription DrugsIn a recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, research showed that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) were linked to chronic kidney disease. These drugs, including those such as Prevacid, Prilosec, and Nexium, have been among the most commonly prescribed in the nation since the arrival on the market.

Now, there have been numerous reports that have shown a connection between these PPIs and various health issues, including chronic kidney disease, low magnesium levels, fractured bones, and potential interactions with drugs used for cardiovascular reasons. Furthermore, they have been linked to infections because of the reduction in the stomach’s acidity.

The study shows that of over 10,000 adults and more than 250,000 patients, individuals who were using prescription PPIs were 20% to 50% more likely to develop chronic kidney disease. Furthermore, utilizing the patient sample, the study showed that when a patient took the drug once a day, the risk for chronic kidney disease rose 15%. For those taking it twice a day, the risk increased to 46%.

Despite these concerns, prescriptions of these PPIs have not decreased. They are still some of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the country and are taken every day without second thought.
