Explosion Injures 7 Workers near Port Arthur, Texas

Aug 15, 2016

Seven workers were injured in an explosion on Friday, August 12 at the Sunoco Logistics Terminal located just north of Nederland, TX. According to Jefferson County Sheriff's Office’s public information officer Deputy Marcus McLellan, four of the injured people needed to be taken to Galveston and Houston burn centers via medical helicopter, while the other three workers were taken to local Beaumont, TX area hospitals via ambulance.

None of the workers died from their injuries as of Saturday morning, but the police haven’t given an update on their conditions. The cause of the explosion and ensuing flash fire are still under investigation by Sunoco and L-Con, Inc., a Houston-based contractor the seven workers were employed by.

The facility is used as a crude oil holding site, not as a refinery. It is the Keystone pipeline from Cushing, OK’s southern terminus, hand handles hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil every day before being transferred to other processing plants in the area. L-Con, Inc. provides construction management services to a variety of customers, including facilities that store petrochemicals.

Industrial explosions are difficult to predict, but it’s the responsibility of the managers or contractors to ensure that regulations are met in order to ensure the safety of their workers.
