Metal Workers Undergoing Lung Disease Testing After Asbestos Exposure

Apr 7, 2016

Metal WorkerNumerous metal workers who were exposed to asbestos are undergoing tests to determine if they developed any form of lung disease such as asbestosis or mesothelioma. The normal tests include blood work, blood pressure checks, a breathing / pulmonary test, and an X-ray of the chest.

One of the screenings that took place was at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 12 and was organized by the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust. In 2015, this trust helped to screen roughly 1,400 workers and this year, they expect to test 1,800 more. The metal workers pay for the screening with two cents of every hour of work they perform.

The construction and industrial industries place workers at high risk of asbestos exposure so those who worked in these fields should maintain regular testing and screening. This can help these workers catch potential dangers sooner rather than later as mesothelioma can take quite some time before it develops.

The screening at Local 12 is typically for eligible workers who spent over 20 years in the construction industry. The reason for this is the typical amount of time that it takes for symptoms mesothelioma to show is around 25 years.

Our mesothelioma attorneys at Bailey Peavy Bailey Cowan Heckaman know what kind of struggles you may encounter if you have been exposed to asbestos. The fibers, if inhaled, can result in long-term damage to the lungs, often developing into life-threatening cancer.
