Veterans and Mesothelioma

Were You Exposed to Asbestos While Serving in the Military?

Many individuals who have been or will be diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos during their time in the military. These veterans fought for and served our country, but rather than being honored, they were dealt the devastating hand of a mesothelioma diagnosis.

The mesothelioma lawyers at Bailey Cowan Heckaman want to get justice for all veterans who have been diagnosed with this terminal disease. We are proud to serve veterans of the United States and help them obtain benefits related to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Why Are So Many Veterans Diagnosed with Mesothelioma?

Approximately 30% of all people diagnosed with mesothelioma are veterans.

Asbestos was prevalent in the U.S. Navy, but it was also commonplace in other branches of the military, such as the Air Force, Army, and the Marine Corps. The U.S. Air Force used asbestos in many capacities around their bases as well as in planes, the Army used asbestos in barracks, mess halls, and vehicles, and the Marine Corps used asbestos to manufacture everything from airplanes to armored vehicles.

Veterans who served between the years 1940 and 1980 are at the highest risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The military stopped using asbestos in large part in the 1970s, but by then it was too late for many individuals who may only now be showing signs of mesothelioma. Additionally, many of the products containing asbestos were not replaced until recently, so veterans who served after 1980 may also be at risk.

The Veterans Administration (VA) provides special monetary benefits for veterans with asbestosis, mesothelioma cancer, and other asbestos-related diseases, so call now to get started on yor case!

Asbestos on Navy Ships

Hundreds of products commonplace to U.S. Navy ships, such as pipe coverings and valves, were manufactured using the substance asbestos. This is true of most Navy vessels manufactured before 1980.

Asbestos was cheap, insulated well, and was resistant to heat and many chemicals, making it a sought-after material for building Navy ships. Sadly, this resulted in many veterans who worked in shipyards, boiler rooms, and other areas within or near ships eventually being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
