Our National Asbestos Lawyers Have Successfully Represented Our Clients

The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a substance that was heavily used in many types of products and in manufacturing for centuries due to its fire retardant and heat resistant properties. It wasn’t until fairly recently that the deadly nature of this substance was confirmed. Today, asbestos is banned in 50 countries worldwide, but many people are still exposed to it in products being used as well as old buildings and other structures that contain products with asbestos. Symptoms can take up to 50 years to develop after exposure.

Asbestos is now listed as a human carcinogen, known to cause
mesothelioma cancer, asbestosis, and other conditions.

How Does Pleural Mesothelioma Develop?

Pleural mesothelioma is caused by breathing in asbestos fibers, which then become trapped in the pleural membrane and cause scarring over time in the soft tissue. These fibers are like microscopic needles. Even as the body tries to expel the asbestos fibers, some become lodged in the pleura, causing inflammation and scar tissue over time. The symptoms that may develop as a result of pleural mesothelioma include:

  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Difficulty or pain in breathing
  • Lower back pain
  • Rib pain
  • Dry coughing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Lumps felt on the chest under the skin
