The most common type of mesothelioma, by far, is pleural mesothelioma. This accounts for approximately 75%, or 3 in 4 , of all mesothelioma cases. Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleura, which is the lining around the lungs.

These fibers are like microscopic needles. Even as the body tries to expel the asbestos fibers, some become lodged in the pleura, causing inflammation and scar tissue over time.
