Effective Mesothelioma Screening

Cytology is the section of pathology dealing with diagnoses of conditions and diseases based on the study of cells based on tissue samples. Mesothelioma cancer can be diagnosed using cytology. Keep reading to learn more about cytology and mesothelioma. If you have questions about the legal aspect of your asbestos mesothelioma case, you should not hesitate to speak with our team of trial lawyers at BPB.

How Does Cytology Work?

In a traditional biopsy, a sample of tissue up to several inches long is taken. Cytology specimens are typically much smaller and may consist of as little as a single drop of tissue fluid or blood. These samples are used for diagnosis and screening purposes.

A cytology specimen can reveal mesothelioma before symptoms have begun.

  • This is important for two reasons:
    • Typically, by the time symptoms develop, the mesothelioma has already advanced dangerously.
    • Treatment for mesothelioma cancer is much more effective if the cancer is caught early.

It is important to be proactive if you experienced exposure to asbestos at any period of your life, or if you lived with someone who worked in situations where asbestos fibers were present. This includes members of the military, construction workers, railroad workers, and more. Mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to develop. Talk with your doctor about regular screenings for mesothelioma cancer.

What Are the Benefits of Cytology?

  • There are several benefits of cytology screenings:
    • They are less expensive
    • They are much less difficult to obtain than biopsies
    • They are less painful
    • They have less risk of injury or side effects

However, biopsies are more accurate. It’s important to speak with your doctor about your individual needs and what is best for you. Speak with a member of our team at BPB if you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Call our trial attorneys for a free review at (888) 367-7160.
