Experience and Practice Area

Lou spent several years as an associate at Haynes and Boone, L.L.P. in Dallas, Texas, working in the commercial litigation section. There, she worked on and was involved with various types of commercial cases, including contract disputes, bad faith cases, and insurance

In 1997, she joined Baron and Budd, L.L.P., as a trial associate. During the four (4) years she was with Baron and Budd, Lou was responsible for the management and trial of thousands of asbestos poisoning cases filed in various jurisdictions and states. She presented for deposition medical and state of the art experts as well as took the discovery and depositions of the defense experts. During that time, Lou negotiated multi-million dollar settlements with certain defendants liable to victims of asbestos poisoning, including the owners and operators of premises upon which the victims worked. She was involved in many asbestos trials, including the first verdict against Borg Warner Corporation on behalf of a brake mechanic with asbestosis in Brown v. Borg Warner Corporation.

Subsequently, Lou joined Brent Coon & Associates in 2001, as the managing attorney of the Houston office. Lou participated in the trials of the mesothelioma cases of Verda Sutton v. Kelly Moore Paint Company and Dana Corporation and Charlene Lonas v. Fluor Corporation. She also tried several asbestosis cases. She managed and settled hundreds of asbestos cancer cases filed in various jurisdictions and states.

Currently, Lou is managing the asbestos docket of Bailey Perrin Bailey. The docket primarily consists of mesthelioma cases filed nationally. She will continue her trial work as well as her management and settlement responsibilities. Lou’s primary practice area is toxic tort law, including products liability, premises liability, and employer liability.

Lou is a member of the Board of Directors and currently serves on the Executive Committee as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Texas Trial Lawyers’ Association. She is also a member of the Board of Directors and currently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association.

Personal Information

Lou is married to John M. Black, a partner in the law firm of Heard, Robins, Cloud, Black & Lubel. They have a daughter, named Lily, and a yellow labrador retriever, named Bullitt. Lou, John, Lily, and Bullitt live in Houston, Texas.
