Joby Hughs

JOBY A HUGHES, born Jackson, Mississippi, 1961; admitted to bar, 1989, Texas, admitted to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office, 1992.

Joby successfully served as lead counsel in several large intellectual property cases over the first ten years of his career.   Examples of the technical subject matter of the cases are business and engineering software, hardware, oil and gas tools, chemical plant control systems, analytical methods and a variety of mechanical devices.   He has successfully tried patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, trade secret, and commercial litigation arising out of licenses and other technology-related agreements.

Beginning in 1996, he was the founder and president of Litigation Risk Management, Inc., a company that applied cutting edge proprietary techniques developed by him to successfully analyze intellectual property risk for Lloyd’s of London underwriters.    Joby eventually sold this consulting practice to a major international insurance broker in 2002 and served as a Senior Vice President in charge of Intellectual Asset Management for the company until 2004.

In 2004-2005, Joby was a co-founder of Altitude Capital Partners, a private investment firm focused on acquiring interests in intellectual property assets.  After taking part in capital raising and several initial investments, he left ACP in 2006 to focus more on the active management of intellectual property assets and a return to the private practice of law.

His practice is now centered on activities related to intellectual property transactions and management.  These activities include identifying, structuring deals for, performing and coordinating diligence for, developing monetization strategies for, managing (including managing litigation), and selling intellectual property assets.

With a national and international practice, his legal and consulting practices have involved clients in over half of the United States, and in several foreign countries.

Joby is a frequent speaker on topics related to intellectual property risk analysis, diligence, and intellectual property management and litigation.

Prior to law school, Joby began his professional career as a consultant with Andersen Consulting, now Accenture.
